What is Heatstroke in dogs?

Heatstroke in dogs is when your dog has a body temperature higher than 104 degrees.

Symptoms of Heatstroke in dogs also include:

  • Excessive panting
  • Increased heart rate
  • Drooling
  • Reddened gums
  • Vomiting/diarrhea
  • Mental dullness or confusion
  • Loss of movement control or consciousness

What to do if you are seeing signs of Heatstroke?

  1. Move to a cool or shaded area away from the direct heat
  2. Pour cool, not cold water over the dog
  3. Encourage the dog to drink small amounts of water
  4. If you have a fan place it by them.
  5. Continue to pour cool water until temp is below 103.5

Do not use water that is “too cold” for drinking or pouring!

Make sure that the water you are using for your dog is not so cold that they begin to shiver. This will lead to other complications in the near future.

Can you treat heatstroke in dogs at home?

No. When a dog is experiencing heat stroke be sure to take all measures possible to help cool the dog. Then, pre-cool the car if possible for your trip to the vet which must be made as soon as possible. The only way to treat heat stroke is through a vet visit.

Is ice bad for dogs?

NO! Contrary to popular belief, feeding dogs ice or using ice in their water is not dangerous to their health. Dr. Tina Wismer, the Medical Director of ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, states that “Dogs do not bloat from drinking ice water on hot days… They can be given as treats or put in the water bowl. Some behaviorists even recommend freezing toys or treats in ice for dogs to chew on.”
