Nathan Piper was born in Bryan, Texas, where he grew up showing reining horses as a youth in AQHA, NRHA, and 4-H competition. Born into a family and community of Aggies, Nathan attended Texas A&M University and majored in Agricultural Development. During his junior year of college he decided to forgo his non-pro status and become an NRHA professional. He graduated from Texas A&M University in 1999 and married his wife Jean in 2000.
After graduation, the newlyweds moved to Whitesboro, Texas, to work for two time NRHA Futurity Champion, Todd Sommers, as an assistant trainer. In 2004, Nathan and his wife Jean purchased a training facility in Madisonville, Texas, where they successfully continued to build on the young legacy of Nathan Piper Reining Horses.
In 2009, they sold their ranch in Madisonville and moved to the well-known Skyline Ranch in Aubrey, Texas, where they currently operate. In February 2012, Nathan and Jean welcomed their first child Millie into their family.
Nathan is a multiple time NRHA Open Futurity, Derby and NRBC finalist with lifetime earnings in excess of $458,089. He made his first NRHA Open Futurity Finals aboard Thechexkeepmestylin in 2010. The following years have been a true success with multiple aged event finalists.
The year, 2013, was a truly special one. Nathan qualified both of his entries for the NRHA Open Futurity Finals. Both horses In Like Flinn & Shiners Crown Jewels were owned by John and Nancy Tague of Pilot Point, TX. With a score of 223, In Like Flinn finished 4th in the Open Finals. Earlier in the fall of 2013 , Nathan and In Like Flinn won the first annual Heritage Futurity with a score of 150.5
Nathan has also proven to have an extremely successful non-pro program with his non-pro riders earning in excess of $300,000.
