How to Keep Your Horse Hydrated This Summer
Share
As summer approaches, staying hydrated becomes a top priority for horse owners. Proper hydration is essential for your horse's health and well-being during the warmer months. Here’s how to check if your horse is dehydrated and the steps you can take to rehydrate them effectively.
How to Check for Dehydration in Horses
Pinch Test
One of the most reliable methods to assess your horse's hydration level is the pinch test. Here’s how to perform it:
- Pinch a Fold of Skin: Gently pinch a fold of skin on your horse’s neck.
- Release and Observe: Release the skin and observe how quickly it returns to its normal position.
- Evaluate Elasticity: Healthy skin should return to its original state within 3 seconds. If it takes longer, your horse may be dehydrated.
Gum Test
Another effective way to determine if your horse is dehydrated is by examining their gums. Follow these steps:
- Inspect the Gums: Lift your horse’s lip to expose their gums.
- Check the Color: The gums should be light pink and moist. A white or pale color can indicate dehydration.
- Perform a Pressure Test: Press your finger on the gum for 2 seconds. The color should return quickly (within 2 seconds). If it takes longer, your horse may need rehydration.
Steps to Rehydrate Your Horse
If your tests indicate dehydration, here are the steps to help rehydrate your horse:
-
Administer Electrolytes: Use electrolyte supplements in paste or powder form mixed with their water or food. To ensure full consumption, consider adding a high-quality oil supplement such as Excel Pro Elite.
-
Seek Veterinary Help: For severe cases of dehydration, immediate veterinary attention is necessary. A veterinarian may need to administer intravenous (IV) fluids to restore hydration levels.
