Fernando Salgado: A Journey in Reining Excellence

Early Beginnings in São Paulo, Brazil

Fernando Salgado was born and raised in a performance horse family in São Paulo, Brazil. Growing up, Fernando, along with his older brothers, trained professionally, following the path laid by their uncle, Jango Salgado. During his early career, Fernando found significant success in the show pen while working closely with his brother Eduardo. His collaboration with Eduardo led to numerous prestigious wins in Brazil. Fernando often credits his brother for “teaching me everything” and shaping his foundational skills.

Transition to the United States and Professional Growth

In 2010, Fernando made a pivotal move to the United States, where he began his role as the first assistant trainer at Xtra Quarter Horses, under the mentorship of Thiago Boechat. Xtra Quarter Horses, renowned for being home to the legendary Wimpys Little Step, provided Fernando with the opportunity to work with some of the industry's finest reining horses, including the impressive Shiners Voodoo Dr.

Fernando’s pursuit of excellence didn’t stop there. He further honed his skills by riding under the renowned Andrea Fappani. This experience allowed him to deepen his training knowledge and enhance his competitive edge. Today, Fernando and his wife, Sabrina, run their own training business, Fernando Salgado Reining Horses, located in Gainesville, TX.

Accomplishments and Recognition in Reining

Fernando Salgado’s show career is marked by numerous achievements. Notable among them are his two top-five finishes in the National Reining Breeders Classic Level 4 and Level 3 open divisions aboard Gunnabeabrightstar. His exceptional performance earned him the prestigious title of Million Dollar Rider in 2023, highlighting his prominence and success in the reining world.
