Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue: Reinventing Racehorses and Ensuring Sanctuary

Introduction to Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue

Founded in 2006 by John Hettinger, Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue operates on a 325-acre farm in Pawling, NY. This 501(c)(3) non-profit organization is dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of retired Thoroughbred racehorses, transitioning them to fulfilling second careers.

Mission and Values

Akindale remains true to the values instilled by its founder, focusing on the welfare of Thoroughbreds and their transition from racing to new careers. We operate with a commitment to excellence, ensuring every horse receives the care they need.

Supporting Akindale

As a non-profit, Akindale relies on tax-deductible donations to support its mission. Whether it's a one-time cash gift, material donation, or a long-term sponsorship, every contribution helps cover the costs of caring for over 130 Thoroughbreds. Donate to Akindale to make a difference in these horses' lives.

Reinventing Racehorses Program

Evaluating and Retraining Thoroughbreds

Akindale's "Reinventing Racehorses" program has successfully rehabilitated, retrained, and re-homed hundreds of Thoroughbreds. Horses are sourced from various tracks, private trainers, and aftercare programs such as Beyond the Wire and New York Horsemen Take the Lead. Each horse undergoes thorough evaluation upon arrival, either entering our rehab program or enjoying 60 days of rest.

Preparing Horses for New Careers

Once rehabilitated, horses enter our retraining program. We focus on building a solid foundation to ensure each horse is prepared for its new career. Our horses are available for adoption and are suitable for various disciplines, from trail riding to professional prospects.

Sanctuary for Retired Thoroughbreds

Lifetime Care and Companionship

In line with John Hettinger's vision, Akindale provides sanctuary for 120 permanently retired Thoroughbreds. These horses live out their days in lush pastures, enjoying a peaceful retirement. While they may not be suitable for riding, they are available through our companionship program.
