EIPH- Why is my horse bleeding?

What is EIPH?

Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is a major health concern and cause of poor performance in the equine athlete. EIPH is also known as "bleeding." Chronic bleeding has a common denominator of strenuous exercise. Thus it comes as no surprise that racing, eventing, load hauling, and polo ponies have more occurrences of this side effect from strenuous exercise.

Why do horses bleed?

When a horse is working hard at exercise they develop very high blood pressure. This stiffens small blood vessels making them weak and prone to breaking. When blood is pushed through the pulmonary circulation, high pressure in the pulmonary capillaries is created. Resulting in the capillaries rupturing, therefore releasing blood into the alveoli of the lung.  Because of these rupturing capillaries, EIPH can occur when blood enters the air passage of a horse’s lung.

ProElite can help with chronic bleeders

Are there any internal bleeding symptoms?

Symptoms can include:

    • Coughing

    • Poor Recovery Rate

    • Poor Performance

    • Frequent Swallowing

Can you use Vitamin C for horses that have EIPH?

    • Aids in collagen construction and maintenance in blood vessels

    • Vital for the hemostasis process

    • Needed for maintaining iron and enzymes that are responsible for the strength and elasticity of blood vessels and capillaries.

    • Responsible for forming new red blood cells. These aid in: wound healing, tissue repair, enhanced immune function, and proves an anti-inflammatory action.

What are bioflavonoids and how can they help bleeders?

Bioflavonoids are a group of plant-based compounds. They are found in citrus fruit peels, tea leaves, wine, and many different types of produce. Bioflavonoids have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This substance can strengthen lung capillaries, therefore reducing their tendency to rupture during strenuous exercise.

Is there a long-term treatment for horses that suffer from EIPH?

While there is no proven 100% effective treatment, dietary intervention can contribute to a reduction of some physiological risk factors. It can even lessen the frequency and severity. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, mixed with vitamin c and Excel's exclusive bioflavonoids make Excel Vitality the perfect addition to a horse's diet that has a strenuous job!
